Promoting British Values

Year 4:  MP’s, Lords and the Monarch

This term Year 4 have been studying the three core parts of the British government: the House of Commons, the House of Lords and the Monarch. We looked at how these three components work together to create new laws.

First we created posters to record all the key facts we had learnt.

Next we passed our own ‘laws’. Half of the class were made MP’s and half were made into Lords. We came up with own bills that were passed between the Commons and the Lords to be amended; before they were given to the Queen for her approval. Only after being approved by the Monarch can a bill become law.

The final Bills were:

  • Ban smoking

If broken the offender would be sentenced to 5 months community service for the Queen. Reoffenders would spend 3 years in prison.

  • Ban graffiti

If broken the offender would be sentenced from 1 week to 52 weeks in prison, depending on the size of the graffiti.
